Trump, the first prisoner after the reopening of Alcatraz

Prison for “America’s Most Dangerous Criminals”

Last year, Trump announced his intention to turn Alcatraz back into a maximum-security prison. It would then house “America’s most dangerous and violent criminals.” The right-wing populist sees the measure as a symbol of a tougher approach in the fight against crime.

Alcatraz, the prison island located two kilometers off the coast of San Francisco, was closed in 1963 due to high operating costs. According to the U.S. Department of Correction, the prison was only in operation for 29 years. Today, the rocky island in San Francisco Bay is one of the region’s most famous tourist attractions.
